AI won't replace HR. HR that uses AI will replace HR that doesn't.
The question is not whether the machines are coming for the profession. It is whether the profession will show up to meet them.
This year, as an SVP with more than twenty years in banking HR, I sat down and got certified in the Claude AI platform by Anthropic and in AI prompt engineering with the Dubai Future Foundation.
Not because my role required it. Because I refuse to lead people through a transformation I have not been through myself. You cannot coach leaders on the future of work from behind a wall of slides someone else prepared.
What AI actually takes off HR's plate
Be honest about what fills an HR team's week: drafting job descriptions, summarizing engagement feedback, preparing talent-review packs, answering the same policy question forty ways. AI does this work in minutes, and does it well. If that is the bulk of what your HR function offers, the anxiety is rational.
But that was never the job. That was the admin around the job.
What it cannot touch
No model tells a capable executive that his leadership style is the reason his best people keep leaving, and holds the silence afterwards. No model earns the trust that makes a CEO test a succession idea out loud before it is safe to say in a committee. No model sits with someone whose role has just been made redundant and treats them with the dignity that moment demands.
Judgment, courage and trust are the profession. AI just removed the paperwork that was hiding them.
Where to start this quarter
Drafting. Let AI produce the first version of every JD, policy summary and communication, and hold your team accountable for the judgment in the final version.
Listening at scale. Point it at your engagement comments and exit themes. Patterns you would need a month to find surface in an afternoon, then go verify them with real conversations.
Your own hands. Do not delegate AI literacy to a task force. Get certified yourself. The credibility of saying "I use this daily" changes every room you say it in.
AI is not a threat to HR. It is a filter. It separates the professionals who administered processes from the ones who build leaders, cultures and businesses. Choose your side of the filter early.
